The polyphenols and methylxanthine compounds in cocoa bean shell extract exerted various biological activities. As such, the antioxidant and apoptotic activity of cocoa husk extract was reported when tested on prostate cancer cells. The fraction (ethylacetate and butanol) of the extract was found to contain catechin, epicatechin, and procyanidin B.

Cocoa bean husk extract (CBHE) was obtained by thermal treatment at 170 °C for 30 min. The CBHE was added to a virgin olive oil jam in a freeze-dried form or encapsulated. Phenols, theobromine, and antioxidant activity were determined over 28 days in both jams and compared to a control jam.

- What are the methods of oil extraction from oil seeds?
- 7. Conclusions Oil extraction methods from oil seeds include conventional methods (solvent and mechanical extraction) and nonconventional or improved techniques (supercritical fluid extraction, ultrasound, microwave, and enzyme assisted extraction.
- Which methods are used in vegetable oil extraction?
- From the preceding analysis, it is observed that recent research on vegetable oil extractions has been focused more on the assisted methods (microwave and ultrasound) and supercritical fluid extraction compared to the conventional solvent and mechanical extraction methods.
- Which seeds are used for oil extraction?
- For oil extraction in particular, it has been applied to a wide variety of seeds such as apricot, canola, soybean, sunflower, grape, acorn and walnut seeds [ 44 ].
- What is mechanical oil extraction?
- Conventional oil extraction Mechanical oil extraction, also known as cold pressing or expeller pressing, is a method of extracting oil from oilseeds using mechanical means without the use of solvents or chemicals. It is a simple and traditional method that preserves the natural flavor, color, and nutrients of the oil ( Fig. 6.2 ).
